About the Artist

Born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama, Barbara Davis has painted since the age of fourteen. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Auburn University Montgomery but worked in the banking industry for 23 years—with art as her avocation—before realizing her dream of working as a full-time professional.

Barbara has won numerous awards for her artwork in regional and national shows and is in collections across the country including Alabama Department of Archives and History; Auburn University; University of Alabama Alpha Omicron Pi house; Energen Corporation; Alabama Power Company; Cook Museum of Natural Science; US District Courthouse Middle District of Alabama; Montgomery County Commission; Jackson Hospital; Mobile Infirmary.

Barbara is a member of Oil Painters of America, the Portrait Society of America, and she holds Signature Membership with the American Impressionist Society.

Artist Statement

“I painted portraits full time in the mid 1990’s, but in 2004 I began painting en plein air and it changed my life. My work improved and it opened doors to meet other artists, join painting groups and study with many well-established artists from across the country. After years of studying painting, my dream of working as a full-time artist was realized in 2010, and I am thankful to all of these incredible teaching artists who have been willing to share their knowledge.

I have found the common threads for all of my painting subjects – whether the sky, the landscape, florals or figures – are light and its effect on the subject. I am hungry to learn more, to notice more, to capture more of the effect light has on color, value, and the modeling of form. It is my goal to create not photographic realism, but an impression of light.”
